Newspaper Features our Cambria Garden

The San Luis Obispo County Tribune featured our garden in the Wednesday, June 20, 2018 edition of its Home and Garden Section. The article,”Chickens are the Star of this charming English cottage-style Cambria Garden“, describes our garden as “English cottage garden meets drought-tolerant”. I thought that was fairly accurate.

The reporter, Tami Reece, listed the plants she observed as we wandered along the paths,  and in the final piece, described the techniques I had learned and employed in the Master Gardeners program of Marin and San Luis Obispo counties. The garden has been a labor of love for the past 15 years beginning when we built the house.

Reece described the chicken house, garden shed, glass garden room and our new mini-orchid then went on the list many of the plants thriving in our coastal climate.

While things are never perfect in my garden, we had cleaned it up and trimmed the trees and shrubs. Things were just beginning to bloom, but to me, looked a bit blah. A month later, of course, the garden was a blast of color from fruit trees, foxgloves, iris, and lavatera. There is a quote, “the garden always looked better, yesterday”.

It was enjoyable showing the garden to the writer and photographer. The garden reflects my interest in the natural sciences, sustainability, and my willingness to experiment with gardening practices. Our garden gives us great pleasure. My only regret is that I didn’t let the chickens out to have their portraits taken but if you’d like, you can see them on “Backyard hencam” or in my photo below.

  1. I was able to visit your garden when it was part of the Cambria Garden Tour, years ago now. I especially liked your chicken set-up (though, of course, your garden was beautiful, too!).

I miss the Cambria Garden Tour so much, such a fun day to spend with my fellow garden-loving pal. I keep hoping it will be resurrected. I guess that ship has sailed…
